Paying AMAHJ to Mahjong

The history of Mahjong dates back to China in the mid 1800s. The ancient game was initially a male dominated game that was played  as a gambling past time when the country was in the throws of turmoil and tragedy. "Mahjong" means "sparrow" in certain Chinese dialects, and was given it's name due to the clacking sound that the tiles would make. Often referred to as China's "National past time", the game was introduced in America in the 1920's and has continued to rise in popularity.

While AMAHJ tile sets are designed with the more recently adapted American style play, also known as "American Mahjongg", it is very important to us that we honor and respect the deep cultural significance that the game has so rightly earned. Our sets are craftfuly and carefully made in China, where the game of Mahjong began. Our skilled set of artisans love and appreciate the game as much as we do.

Mahjong has proven to be a game that has that ability to bridge many different cultures, and we are so thrilled to be able to make the game of mahjong more accessible. Our sets are different than most, with each tile clearly labeled and easily identifiable- making it the perfect set for the beginner, or the most advanced of players.

We want to thank you for visiting our site, and hope that our sets inspire many many games of mahjong, for generations to come!
